AI for roofing companies: what the tools do today

AI for roofing companies falls into five groups today: measurement and estimating tools, features built into CRMs and accounting apps, call answering and chat tools, general assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude, and an assistant that works across your apps for the whole team. Each one handles a different slice of office work, and none of them replaces the licensed or judgment work: claim negotiation, pricing decisions and final approvals stay with people. Alvin is the fifth kind: one assistant the team asks in an app or by forwarding an email, with approvals and a receipt for every action.

The five kinds of AI roofing software

| Kind | What it does | Where it stops |
|---|---|---|
| Measurement and estimating tools | Produce roof measurements from aerial imagery or photos and help turn them into an estimate. EagleView is a well-known measurement provider. | They do not see rotten decking or bad flashing, and they do not know your prices unless you load them |
| AI built into CRMs and accounting apps | Summarize a job, draft a message, suggest a category for a transaction, inside that one product | They work on the data inside that product only |
| Call answering and chat tools | Answer the phone or website chat, collect details, book or pass on the lead | They take the message; the rest of the job is still yours |
| General assistants (ChatGPT, Claude) | Write, summarize, explain and analyze what one person pastes or uploads | They are set up for one person and do not come with your shop's roles, approvals or records |
| A team assistant across your apps (Alvin) | Takes a request and does the steps in your CRM, QuickBooks, portals and email | Money and customer-facing actions wait for approval; no phone line today |
Features in every one of these products change quickly. Treat the table as a map of categories and check each vendor's site for what a product does this month.

What each kind is good for
Measurement and estimating. The value is speed before the appointment. A salesperson arrives with squares, pitch and lengths already in hand. Verify the report on site and keep a person responsible for scope.
AI inside your CRM or accounting app. Turn on what your vendor already includes before buying anything else. The limit is the edge of the product: the CRM's helper cannot see the supplier portal, and the accounting helper cannot see the photos.
Call answering and chat. Roofing leads often call after hours and during storms. Listen to real recordings before you buy, and decide what happens after the message is taken. For the text-based alternative, see roofing missed call recovery.
General assistants. Good for one person at a keyboard: rewriting a scope in plain words, summarizing a long adjuster email, drafting a job ad, checking a spreadsheet formula. Keep customer personal data and passwords out of them unless your plan and policy allow it, and read every output before using it.
A team assistant across apps. This kind does the carrying work between systems. With Alvin, anyone on the team asks in the Alvin app or forwards an email: "build the material order for the Henderson job", "which estimates are older than ten days", "register the warranty for the Patel roof". Alvin works in the apps you already use. Where there is no direct connection, Alvin uses a browser with logins saved in the vault, so staff never see the passwords.
What to hand over first
Start with work that is frequent, rule-based and easy to check. A sensible order for a roofing office:
- Estimate follow-up. A list of stale estimates and a drafted message for each, approved in a batch. See roofing estimate follow-up.
- Unpaid invoice reminders. Worked from QuickBooks balances, so a paid invoice never gets a reminder.
- Material order drafts. Built from the measurement report and the estimate, checked by production before the order is placed.
- Document assembly. Completion packets for insurance jobs, warranty registrations, permit applications.
- Review requests. Sent after final payment, from your own number or email.
- The morning briefing. What is scheduled, what is stuck, what is due.
Approve every send for the first few weeks. Loosen limits only where the drafts have been right.
What to keep human
- Claim negotiation. Discussing coverage, scope or price with an adjuster is licensed or regulated activity in many states, and it takes judgment. Software can assemble the file and track the status. A person has the conversation.
- Pricing decisions. The price sheet, margins, discounts and which three options to offer.
- Final approvals. Anything that spends money or reaches a customer: orders, invoices, refunds, permit fees, messages.
- Roof inspection and scope. What is wrong with this roof and what it needs.
- Upset customers. A leak after install gets a phone call from a person.

Questions to ask any AI vendor
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What can it do without a person approving? | You need to know what could go out wrong |
| Can I set limits by role and by dollar amount? | A crew lead and an owner should not have the same reach |
| Is there a record of every action: who asked, who approved, what changed? | You will need it the first time a customer disputes something |
| How does it get into my apps, and where are the logins stored? | Passwords in a shared document are a risk |
| Whose name, number and email do customer messages come from? | Customers should hear from your business, with opt-outs honored |
| Does it ever hold or move my money? | You should stay the buyer and the merchant of record |
| What does it cost at my real volume, and can I export my data and leave? | Usage pricing and lock-in show up later |
What Alvin handles and what stays with you
| Alvin does | You do |
|---|---|
| Takes requests from the whole team in the Alvin app or by forwarded email, each person with a role and limits | Set the roles, limits and what needs approval |
| Works across QuickBooks, your CRM (JobNimbus, AccuLynx and others), supplier and manufacturer portals, permit portals and email | Choose the apps and keep the price sheet current |
| Drafts orders, invoices and customer emails and texts, and holds each one for approval | Approve, edit or reject |
| Runs scheduled checks: unpaid invoices, stale estimates, registration deadlines, a morning briefing | Act on what the checks surface |
| Remembers customers, jobs, prices and preferences, in a memory the team can see and edit | Correct what Alvin has wrong |
| Keeps a receipt for every action, with screenshots | Negotiate claims, decide prices, answer the phone |
Alvin has no phone line today and does not answer or make calls. Alvin never holds or moves money. Standard is $99 a month and Pro is $299 a month, plus usage in credits.
Frequently asked questions
How are roofing companies using AI?
Roofing companies use AI for roof measurements, drafting estimates and proposals, following up on estimates and invoices, answering calls and chats, assembling insurance and warranty paperwork, and summarizing job files. Most keep a person approving anything that goes to a customer or spends money.
What is the best AI software for roofing companies?
It depends on the job you want done. Measurement tools, the AI inside your CRM, call answering tools, general assistants and cross-app team assistants each cover different work. Pick the category that matches your biggest backlog and test it on your own jobs.
Can AI write a roofing estimate?
AI can fill in an estimate from a measurement report and your price sheet, including quantities and waste. A person still inspects the roof, decides the scope and approves the price. The tool only knows the prices you give it.
Can AI handle roof insurance claims?
AI can organize the claim file, track which payments have arrived, assemble completion documents and draft status requests. It should not negotiate coverage, scope or price with an insurer. Many states regulate who may do that, and the conversation belongs to a person.
Can a roofing company just use ChatGPT or Claude?
Yes, for one person's writing, summarizing and analysis, and many offices do. A general assistant is not set up out of the box with your team's roles, your approval rules or a record of actions taken in your CRM and QuickBooks. That is the gap a team assistant such as Alvin is built for.
