How the mowing price is worked out
- Crew minutes = crew size x (minutes on site + drive minutes).
- Cost per visit = crew minutes / 60 x cost per crew member hour + equipment and fuel.
- Price per cut = cost / (1 minus margin).
- Monthly price = price per cut x visits per month.
The cost per crew member hour should be the loaded rate plus a share of overhead. Work out the loaded rate with the labor burden calculator.
Why drive time belongs in the price
Two identical lawns are not the same job if one is next door to another customer and the other is 15 minutes away. Dense routes are where mowing makes money. Set a minimum charge so that a small lawn far off the route still covers the stop.
After the price is set
Recurring work only pays if it is billed on time and the price keeps up with fuel and wages. Alvin can compare completed visits in your field service app against invoices in QuickBooks and list what was missed, with every invoice held for approval. Frequently asked questions
How much should I charge to mow a lawn?
Enough to cover the crew's time on site and on the road, equipment and fuel, overhead and a profit margin. With the example numbers above the price is about $56 per cut. Your own costs set your number.
Should I price lawn mowing by the square foot or by time?
Time is the cost you actually pay, so price by time. Square footage is a quick way to estimate the time, but slopes, gates, obstacles and trimming change it.
How many visits are in a month of weekly mowing?
About 4.3 on average, since a year has 52 weeks. Many companies bill a flat monthly price across the season to keep invoices even.
